One thing you can do right now is come up with some new year’s resolutions to improve your own home’s security. This is especially important in these difficult times, when civil unrest and the coronavirus pandemic have caused all sorts of worry and anger among the populace.

Utilize Your Home Security

This is a good year to get into the habit of actually using the alarm system you already have. You’d be surprised how many people forget to turn their systems on! When people have a system that can be armed or disarmed from their phone, that helps make it easier to remember to utilize the alarm to the max.

Check Your Fire Alarm Systems

This is a good year to make sure your detectors all work. When’s the last time you tested all the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your house? You might need to get new batteries, or new detectors. Oftentimes, people have too few detectors in their homes and aren’t in compliance with local ordinances. Maybe 2021 is the year when you ask the local fire department to visit and inspect your home and give you tips on what you can do to better equip your house for an emergency.

Change Up Your Locks

Will this be the year you give up physical keys and modernize to the point where you’ve got electronic locks? It could be! You might want to beef up your security system, making sure it’s up-to-date in a 2021 way. Sometimes people get so used to what they’ve used for years and years that they don’t realize that what they’ve got is functionally obsolete. Are you up on the latest technology?

Keep Information Close to the Vest

Finally, when it comes to security, it’s important to think about how you and your family are portraying yourselves on social media. You don’t want to tell the whole world you’re away on vacation– your house can become a target for thieves. You don’t want to give out too much personal information online for any and all to see.
