What are some things you can do to keep burglars away from your home?
Signage
First, you can put up a warning sign in your yard that basically tells potential burglars that your house is protected by a security company and/or system. If a burglar thinks they might get caught, making an alarm go off with police showing up, they’ll tend to avoid your house. Some people just buy signs and put them up, without owning an actual security system, while the majority of people actually do have some sort of system installed to catch any nefarious activity on-site when they’re not at home.
Vision
Burglars like houses where they can’t be seen, so your job is to make them want to avoid your house. That means you should trim the bushes near your windows and doors so they don’t have a place to hide. You should leave lights on in various rooms at night so it looks like someone is home. If it’s winter, you should make sure your driveway is plowed and a friend or neighbor gets your mail/paper and leaves footprints in the snow so your place looks “lived in” even if you’re away in Florida!
Lights are always a good thing at night. Motion sensor lights are especially good– they’ll turn on when someone comes into their vicinity. Burglars want to work in secret and in darkness– light exposes them to anyone nearby, so they’ll quickly try and get out of a lighted area.
Proper Locks
How are your door locks? You might consider installing deadbolt locks on all exterior doors and doors from an attached garage. These deadbolts help prevent entry, making it “that much harder” for a burglar to try and get inside your house through a door. You can also install a heavy-duty strike plate with long screws that penetrate the wall stud in order to make existing locks more secure.
Valuables Put Away
Avoid putting too much stuff outside of your house that might attract burglars. Bring tools, bikes, etc. inside when you’re done using them. You don’t want a burglar to look at your yard (or open garage) and salivate over the expensive things he could steal.
Bark and Bite
Finally, if you have a dog, great! Put up a sign outside your house telling potential burglars that you have a dog. Dogs should be seen and heard in order to deter burglars.
